May Theme: Forest Awakenings – The Edge of Emergence
South River Trail (SRT)
Wednesday, May 27, 2026 | 8:00 AM – 10:30 AM

Program Overview

Wellness Walks in Wildlife invites participants to move in rhythm with the group—adjusting our pace as needed—pausing with intention to notice what the landscape reveals. These weekly notice and wonder sessions unfold across South DeKalb’s interconnected green spaces, where movement and observation meet. Whether the walk leans gentle or more invigorating, each experience is layered with guided stops that deepen awareness of the environments we pass through—what is visible, and what is quietly set into motion.

In May, our focus turns to Forest Awakenings: The Edge of Emergence. Late spring is not a beginning, but a continuation—where longer days and rising temperatures activate a steady progression of life across the landscape. Along the trail, participants will engage both what can be readily observed—active birdlife, flowering edges, and evolving soundscapes—and what exists just beyond immediate view: insects transitioning through life stages, amphibians responding to moisture cycles, and wildlife navigating through connected habitats.

Along the South River Trail, awakening is experienced through connection and continuity. This corridor traces the movement of water, wildlife, and people—revealing how ecosystems extend beyond fixed boundaries. Participants will explore how life emerges along the river’s edge, within floodplain forests, and across transitional spaces shaped by both natural systems and human presence. Here, the forest does not stand still—it stretches, shifts, and carries life forward.

Walks rotate weekly among Constitution Lakes Park, Glen Emerald Park, the Michelle Obama–South River Trail, and the Gresham Park Recreation Center area, highlighting the ecological diversity of this interconnected stewardship cluster.

Accessibility & Site Conditions (ADA Notice)

All South DeKalb Parks Naturalist programs are designed to be welcoming and supportive of participants with varying abilities and mobility levels.

At the South River Trail, the walk follows a wide, paved multi-use path that supports a range of mobility needs, including strollers, wheelchairs, and other mobility aids. The trail includes gradual slopes, long linear stretches, and both shaded and exposed sections.

Participants should be mindful of shared-use conditions, including cyclists and other trail users. Environmental conditions such as heat, humidity, or debris may impact comfort.

Participants with mobility concerns may choose to remain within flatter, more accessible sections of the trail.

Reasonable accommodations may be available upon request. To discuss access needs or alternate route options, please contact the program leader at least 48 hours in advance.
