Writing with Irvin Yalom: A Father-Son Collaboration on ‘Hour of the Heart’

Join us for an insightful conversation with Ben Yalom, son of Irvin D. Yalom, as he shares his experience of co-authoring Hour of the Heart: Connecting in the Here and Now with his father, the renowned psychotherapist and writer. In this special event, we’ll explore the creative process behind the book, the unique dynamics of their father-son collaboration, and Ben’s reflections on working alongside Irvin over the years.

Ben will offer behind-the-scenes insights into how Hour of the Heart came to life, what it was like to write with his father, and how their collaborations have evolved. This is a rare opportunity to hear about the making of a book that distills decades of wisdom into a series of moving, one-time therapy encounters. Whether you're a fan of Irvin Yalom’s work, a writer, or a therapist, this conversation will offer rich insights into the art of storytelling, collaboration, and the human experience.

This workshop will be recorded and you can use the ticket function to pre-purchase the recording before the event. This will be useful for colleagues who are not able to attend the event live and also for those who attend the event live and want to watch it again.

This workshop will be hosted on the Zoom meeting platform where we will use our cameras and microphones to interact with each other as a group.

Benjamin Yalom is a psychotherapist, creative coach, theater-maker, and writer. His therapy and coaching focus on understanding and aligning one’s values with one’s living, and unlocking creative approaches to work and life. He is a longtime writing collaborator with his father, Irvin D. Yalom. Prior to his current doctoral studies in Marriage and Family Therapy, Ben was the visionary force behind foolsFURY theater, which helped transform San Francisco’s performing arts scene in the early 2000s. He is also an award-winning fiction writer, and holds an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. He lives with his wife, Dr. Anisa Yalom, and their three children in San Diego.
