About the workshop: It seems quite evident that the world needs to be saved. Not only our failing environment but countless social justice issues and threats to our democracy are viscerally real right now. These issues can be daunting and that is when turning to the pen can be helpful. Sharing niche information and our specific stories can help empower others to navigate these times and hopefully inspire ways to save the world in their own ways.
During this class, please come equipped with an idea or two; an impactful personal experience or a subject you would like to report on that needs a boost. Instructor Jill Carstens will help you put the topic you are passionate about into a base template that can be transferred to all kinds of writing. Whether your piece becomes a news-type article fit for local papers or a strong personal essay for a literary journal, Carstens will prepare you for submitting for publication.
As a journalist and memoirist, Carstens has shared lesser known stories that help readers better understand important topics from Colorado water rights to the importance of history and place and the effects of gentrification. During this two hour class, participants will get a good start on creating this piece of writing. Carstens will offer follow up help in subsequent weeks to help each individual polish their piece to completion.
Tickets are $10-20 sliding scale, pay-what-you-can.
About the instructor: Jill Carstens has lived in the Denver metro area since the age of three. After a significant teaching career, she turned back to her original vocation: writer. She writes for a variety of publications all over Colorado and keeps a regular column in the Denver North Star newspaper, ”Letters From Miss Jill,” a reflection on her years teaching and single-parenting her son.
