About this Event
We are collectively tired of the term “unprecedented times” and yet as young people, we bear the burden of what that means for our future. With intense political polarization, we are at a point where we are unable to have meaningful conversations to reach each others’ hearts. Since the beginning of time, storytelling has been a powerful tool to connect individuals who are likely to never meet otherwise. Join us for a teen writing workshop to write towards an issue you care deeply about, while utilizing the emotional components of persuasive writing (pathos), alongside strong diction and literary devices to craft masterful poems. Students will begin by journaling, and we will do a short lesson alongside a discussion that is relevant to the topic at hand. We will focus on crafting our own poetry pieces (for the page or stage) that we can perform, read or publish. At the end of this class, students will walk away with a piece of their own to workshop about a cause they care most about.
Tickets for this event are required. This will be a small class, but please put your name on the waitlist if the event "sells out." In many cases, spots will open up.
Sara Bawany is an award-winning poet, two-time author, clinical social worker, and creative writing teacher based in Austin, TX. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Texas State University.
The Badgerdog Creative Writing program includes workshops for all ages, classroom-based lessons, and youth camps to inspire and guide our up-and-coming writers. Badgerdog is a program of The Library Foundation, which offers a range of enriching cultural and educational community programs for all ages in close partnership with the library.
