About this Event
To collect photographs is to collect the world.
—Susan Sontag, On Photography
Photography is a powerful tool for documenting our world, collecting experiences, cementing memory. An art form that is at once political, personal, concrete and ephemeral, photography can also be used to inspire and inform creative writing.
An offshoot of her popular “Writing Berlin” course, artist and writer Demi Anter leads this brand-new, in-person session exploring how to write from photographs, how to use photography in the writing process, and how images / writing can be woven together to document "Place."
With examples from some of the most astute writers on the subject from Sontag, Berger, Barthes and more, we will use playful, hands-on exercises and photographic materials to develop our own writing on the city of Berlin—and to better locate our positions within it.
This workshop will be conducted in English (Demi can also give feedback in German), but attendees are welcome to write in any language. Suitable for writers and artists of all experience levels and genres.
Please note: This is a writing workshop, not a workshop for making new photographs. However, visual artists are welcome!
The girl in the picture is not me, but neither is she a fictional creation. There is no one else in the world I know in such vast and inexhaustible detail.
—Annie Ernaux, A Girl's Story
