About this Event

Facilitators: Academic staff from the Schools of Arts and Humanities

RDF descriptors: 2.1, 2.2, 2.5, 2.6

Artistic and practice-based research has a complicated relationship with the written word. While other disciplinary areas and traditions have also begun to challenge the historic, artificial separation of research and writing, and the primacy of writing in the generation and communication of new knowledge, contemporary arts and humanities research is uniquely placed to address these old assumptions.

In this extended workshop comprising multiple, shorter sessions and activities, we will examine theoretical and practical perspectives on the role of writing in both practice-based research and other arts and humanities methodologies and approaches. Drawing on examples from the facilitators' own experiences, we will explore how you can effectively integrate writing with other elements of your methodology. There will also be opportunities to work on your own writing, and to receive feedback from your peers and academic staff on any obstacles or issues you have encountered during the writing process.

Come and join us in HG/136 (Holgate building, first floor) for this exciting new workshop!

Who is this event for?

Anyone studying for a practice-based PhD or MA by Research is encouraged to take part in this event. If you are undertaking a standard PhD, PhD by Published Works, or MA by Research in an arts or humanities discipline, you are also very welcome; the workshop will cover both practice-based research and other methodologies and philosophies that challenge the traditional role of writing in academic research.

The title of this workshop is inspired by: Stacey, J . and Wolff, J. Writing Otherwise (2013). Manchester: Manchester University Press. It is listed in the PGR School Researcher Development Programme brochure as 'Writing in practice-based research'.
