About this Event
This course is for all levels and genres of writing.
Writing in the moment can feel intimidating and vulnerable, and yet tapping into the subconscious and allowing the words to flow freely can produce surprising and satisfying results.
In this intimate 4-session workshop, we'll explore ways to calm the busy mind through mindfulness practices and tap into our creativity with fun exercises that open up the neural pathways in the right side of the brain (the hemisphere that governs creativity) to help foster flow.
Two prompts will be offered during each session with ample time to write for each, followed by optional sharing of your writing. Inspiration may be drawn from visual cues (ekphrasis), music, or lines /phrases from poems or other pieces or writing.
Limited to 12 participants
WHAT WE'LL COVER
- Allowing the surprise: welcoming what comes
We often push back what wants to come forth when free writing because we self-edit right out of the starting gate, maybe even considering how our potential audience will receive our words. When we do that, we are tailoring, stifling or limiting our creativity, all of which is counterproductive to flow and writing that's alive. Do any of these thoughts sound familiar?
"I don't have anything to write about."
"I can't or I shouldn't write about this."
"This feels too painful/vulnerable to write about."
"What I'm writing isn't interesting enough."
"What I'm writing is off-topic--has nothing to do with the prompt/original idea/intention."
"This isn't what I usually write about/how I usually write. What will people think?"
Once we've identified our creative stumbling blocks, we'll explore:
- The benefits of Flow state
- How to leave your inner critic at the door—it's easier than you think
- Defining Deep Practice
- Exploring The Kitchen Sink Method of unblocking creativity
- The power of writing in a group
- How to turn the heart of flow writing into a polished poem/essay/prose piece
