Photoworks in partnership with Sun Pier House collaboratively host, Writing for Artists: Statements, Open Calls & Competitions - Workshop & Talk led by Curator and Writer Anne Nwakalor.
Anne Nwakalor is the Founding Editor of No! Wahala Magazine, a contemporary photography magazine dedicated to showcasing authentic visual stories told by African creatives, and No! Wahala Media, a creative non profit that champions African photographers through education, publishing and platforming their work. Outside of the magazine, Anne is a Curator and a writer who presently works within the art sector in the UK. Anne has been a jury for numerous photography awards including Taylor Wessing Irish Photo Prize, Water For Life Photography Grant and World Press Photo 2025 Africa. Anne is also a reviewer and has reviewed for Source Graduate Review Selector and FotoFest 2024 Portfolio Reviewer.
Writing for Artists: Statements, Open Calls & Competitions – 2 - Hour Workshop & Talk
TALK SUMMARY:
Join us for a 2-hour workshop and talk designed to help artists confidently write about their work and apply for opportunities. Whether you’re an emerging or established artist, this session will break down the writing process and give you clear, usable tools.
What you’ll learn:
- How to write a clear and compelling Artist Statement
- How to write a focused Project Statement
- How to write strong proposals for open calls
- How to write persuasive entries for competitions
This session combines a talk, examples, and guided exercises to help you develop your own texts. You’ll leave with practical tips and greater confidence in communicating your practice.
Attendees are welcome to bring written questions about open calls and competitions they plan to apply for, and are encouraged to raise them during the Q&A session.
