Layne D. Staral is a sixth generation California. Her ancestors homesteaded the Azusa Valley with other settlers in the 1850s and eventually participated in the building of the towns of Azusa and Glendora. Before she was twenty, she attended the annual Pioneer Picnics with her family, and since she retired from teaching high school English in 2005, Layne had been a volunteer in the Glendora and Azusa Historical Museums.
She’s written articles for the Glendoran magazine on the early history of the valley, and she’s also been responsible for converting the reel-to-reel oral history tapes to a digital format. In 2009, she provided both museums with an accessible typed manuscript of the water commissioners’ proceedings from 1871 to 1888when the old ledger was found in storage. She has a Master’s in English from Cal State University, Los Angeles, and an MFA in Writing from Vermont College. She is also a member of First Century Families.
