We invite you to a special event on November 23 as author Jeremy Paden sits down with author Liz Prather for conversation and readings from his new book, "How to Recognize God’s Chosen." A reception will follow. This event is free to the public."How to Recognize God's Chosen" is a collection of poetic fragments that make up a long poem loosely structured like a gospel account. Pulling from a variety of religious and sacred texts – the Prophets, the Gospels, the Desert Fathers, Medieval mystics, the Upanishads, Sufi poets, and others – and the scholarly, textual debates surrounding manuscript culture, this book imagines a search for the divine set in our contemporary moment of refugee crises, climate catastrophe, political populism, and the various forms of violence that make up life in the 21st century.
Jeremy Paden has a PhD in Spanish from Emory and is a professor of Spanish at Transylvania University and on faculty at Spalding’s Low-Residency MFA in translation. He writes in both English and Spanish and is the author of nine books of poems, 10 books of translated poems, and an award winning illustrated children’s book. He lives in Lexington with his wife, Tracy, and their kids, when their kids are not off at university or out of the country.
Liz Prather is the Co-Director of the Kentucky Writing Project and holds an MFA in Fiction from the University of Texas-Austin. A 27-year high school writing teacher, she is the author of three books about teaching writing from Heinemann Press: "Project Based Writing," "Story Matters," and "The Confidence to Write." She lives in Mt. Sterling with her husband, Paul.
We hope you will join us on November 23 for a unique, thought-provoking evening of conversation.
