Turn your memories into art by learning how to write memoir. The aim of this three-lessoncourse will be for you to write a full essay or chapter over the course of three weeks. In this
class you’ll learn the different types and styles of memoir, how to use sensory elements as
well as plot, theme, and structure to write your personal narrative, and the legalities and
“rules” of memoir. By the end of the program, you’ll have a strong start to writing your
legacy.
Each week, we’ll read one another’s pieces and discuss them. You’ll get helpful feedback
that will help you continue writing your essay or chapter.

Course structure
Videos and digital materials will be available on the Monday before each week. The first
materials will be available by June 1. You’ll get an email with the link to register.
Week 1: learn about genres, how to select a topic, how to select a theme, how to start a
memoir, how to find your authorial voice, and what to do about technical nuances and
legalities (such as “do I have to change names?”), etc. Sample memoir excerpts will be
provided for support. Bring your writing to the first class on Monday, June 8.
Week 2: learn about how to incorporate sensory elements of fiction into your writing, how
to use metaphor and imagery to establish theme, and how best to structure the narrative
arc of your story (and I’ll explain what narrative arcs are, too). You’ll also learn about
creating composite characters and how to know what to put in and what to leave out in
your story. Bring your revised and expanded writing to share and read aloud with the group.
Week 3: learn how to edit and revise your writing, how to finish an essay or a chapter, and
how to think about the piece you’ve written in the context of a larger project if you wish to
use this momentum to continue a summer memoir writing project. I’ll explain why I think
everyone needs to write at least one memoir. Focus on finishing your piece to share with
the group in the last session.
About the teacher
Amy Delcambre is a veteran developmental editor (DE) with enterprise in a variety of
genres. Albeit, Amy’s primary genre is memoir / creative nonfiction. Not only was her
graduate thesis a memoir, but she also gained a great deal of experience working with
memoirists and creative nonfiction authors while she worked at GracePoint Publishing as a
DE. She has a BA and an MA in English literature and creative writing from the University of
South Alabama and an MPS in publishing from George Washington University. She spent
over 15 years as a professor of literature and writing (memoir, writing for social media,
technical writing, creative nonfiction, short story, etc.) for the University of South Alabama
and for the University of Phoenix online. Though she is mostly focused on her own writing,
she has always felt the call to teach. She enjoys encouraging emerging writers, and she
very much enjoys sharing the wealth of knowledge she has gleaned about writing and the
publishing industry over the past 25 years.
