About the Event
In the From Emotions to Advocacy training program, you learn how to take an active role in managing your child's special education. You'll learn about the five key sections in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), what our child's test scores mean, and how to develop SMART IEPs. Pat will teach you how to prepare for meetings, the gentle art of disagreeing, and how to maintain healthy working relationships with the school.
You will learn:
- About IDEA - Sections 1400, 1401, 1412, 1414, + 1415
- Using the Bell Curve to understand your child's strengths and needs
- Using a Parent Agenda
- How to build healthy working relationships with school personnel
- How to document information that may prevent or resolve disputes
- How to participate as an equal member of your child's IEP team

About the speaker, Pat Howey:
Pat Howey holds a Master of Jurisprudence with a concentration in Special Education Advocacy from St. Mary’s University Law School and a B.A. in Paralegal Studies from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. She is a member of Lambda Epsilon Chi, an Indiana registered paralegal, an affiliate member of the Indiana and American Bar Associations, and a nationally recognized parent advocate with over 40 years of experience helping families.
She is the author of Special Education: Plain and Simple, Special Education, Educación especial: clara y simple, and the Commentary series. Pat has published numerous articles on Wrightslaw’s Ask the Advocate and has been a member of the Wrightslaw Speakers Bureau since 2005, presenting on special education and advocacy nationwide.
Pat is a charter member and past Director of the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates (COPAA) and serves as faculty at the annual Special Education Advocacy Summit at St. Mary’s University Law School in San Antonio, Texas. She currently works as a paralegal in the Education Division of Connell Michael Law Firm in Carmel, Indiana.
Through her From Emotions to Advocacy programs, Pat teaches parents how to assess their children’s strengths and challenges, build effective teams during school meetings, and foster healthy working relationships with school personnel. She specializes in the “gentle art of disagreeing” and in using the Bell Curve to help families understand tests and measurements.
