A meaningful local observance
Each year, Wreaths Across America invites communities across the country to gather on a designated day in December to place wreaths on the graves of veterans—honoring their service and sacrifice, and teaching future generations the value of freedom.
In Johnson City, this tradition is embodied by the local chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (Hill Country Chapter) acting in partnership with WAA to serve the gravesites of veterans in the Masonic Cemetery and surrounding graves in northern Blanco County.

Why It Matters
This event is more than just decorating graves—it’s an act of national remembrance adapted to a local scale:
Remembering the fallen: Each wreath laid represents a veteran who served. The act of placing the wreath and speaking the name of a veteran out loud brings personal acknowledgement to service members.
Honoring those who serve: The ceremony draws volunteers, local citizens, families, and children together in a shared act of civic and patriotic service. It’s not just about the past—but recognizing the continuity of service, duty, and community.
Teaching future generations: From WAA’s own mission statement: “Teach our children the value of freedom.”
In Johnson City, the community event helps embed that mission locally, linking history, service, and civic responsibility.
The 2025 theme for Wreaths Across America is “Keep Moving Forward.”
Wreaths Across America
It was inspired by the last words of Capt. Joshua Byers (U.S. Army, KIA in Iraq, July 2003) — “…keep moving forward.” The theme draws a direct line from individual sacrifice to collective resilience.
How You Can Participate
If you are in or near Johnson City and would like to be involved, here are options:
Volunteer: Help at the ceremony or assist with wreath placement. WAA encourages everyone—of all ages and backgrounds—to participate.
Sponsor a wreath: You don’t have to be physically present to make a difference. Sponsoring a wreath places it on a veteran’s grave and helps the local site reach its goal.
Invite others or spread the word: Bring friends, family, community groups along; help raise awareness locally.
Attend the ceremony: Be at the cemetery at 10:00 a.m. on Dec 13. After the ceremony, join in placing wreaths, following the instructions of site coordinators.
Support the clean-up: On Jan 17 2026 at 10:00 a.m., join in the post-event clean-up to leave the site respectful for future observance.
Wreaths Across America
Johnson City sits in the heart of Texas Hill Country. Events like this bring the national mission of WAA into the local fabric:
The event fosters community cohesion—neighbors coming together in service.
It connects younger generations (students, youth groups) with living veterans or with the memory of veterans who laid the foundation of current freedoms.
It reminds us that the legacy of service is ongoing—every wreath is a story, a life, a commitment made.
The “Keep Moving Forward” theme resonates here: communities recover, rebuild, remember—and continue.
For residents or visitors in the Johnson City area, making time on the morning of December 13 to attend or participate can be a meaningful way to pause, reflect, and engage.
The Wreaths Across America event at Johnson City’s Masonic Cemetery on December 13, 2025 invites us to slow down, to gather, and to act in remembrance. Whether you lay a wreath, volunteer for placement, sponsor from afar, or simply attend with respect, you become part of a nationwide movement of tribute—and local fellowship.
In a time when many things pull us forward at speed, this event invites a moment to honor what came before—and to carry its lessons forward.
