Join us in exploring musical traditions from across the globe in this evening of musical fusion and cross-cultural collaborations.Starting with a 15-minute screening of world fusion music videos exploring diverse musical traditions, discover how artists draw from different regions, histories, and cultural identities to create new musical expressions that connect communities across the globe.
Following the screening, there will be a brief introductory talk by Balamurali Balu, Founder and President of World Fusion reflecting on how music serves as a bridge between cultures. This short presentation will provide context for the live performances that follow.
Next, Renata Choglo will present a short lecture-demonstration and performance on the Middle Eastern violin, introducing characteristic techniques, tonal colors, and musical traditions of the region.
The evening will conclude with a 45-minute lecture-demonstration by Koto Master Masumi Timson, inviting audiences to experience the beauty of the koto, Japan’s traditional and ancient 1,400-year-old string instrument. Masumi will speak about the historical background of the koto and its music, and how traditional Japanese culture has influenced koto repertoire and performance practice. Audience members will have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on activity and learn to play “Sakura Sakura ~ Cherry Blossom,” one of the most well-known Japanese classical pieces.
