It's World Environment Day and you’re invited! Join the friends and City of Marion as we team up to plant thousands of local-native seedlings to recreate a nature-filled native grassland and sheoak grove. Beneath the canopy of old red gums, will be whispery sheoaks, native grasses, wildflowers, salt bushes, herbs and butterfly-attracting beauties of all kinds.
This year’s planting will extend what we began in 2023 – reinstating the distinctive tufts of perennial tussock grasses from the Adelaide Plains. These habitat plants are climate-adaptable, support native animals, and will make a relaxing stroll along the Sturt something quite unique.
RSVP: Contact [email protected] to reserve your place. Groups welcome, but you MUST contact us prior.
MEETING POINT: Gather at the registration desk, located next to Oaklands skate park carpark. (Please note event marquees will fill this space.) All volunteers must be registered to plant prior to entering the planting ground. Volunteers will greet you, induct you to the site, and show you how to plant. No hole-digging is required as City of Marion will pre-drill the holes (thank you!)
WHAT TO BRING: BYO gloves, a small hand trowel, water bottle and any medications or alerts you need for your personal health and safety eg. asthma puffer, epi pen, diabetes alert bracelet. No long-handled gardening tools please you won’t need them.
WHO TO BRING: This is a community event – friends, family and neighbours are welcome. Kids under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and pets must be on a lead at all times. If you require mobility assistance, please contact us prior to the event so our volunteers can provide appropriate support.
WHAT TO WEAR: You will be comfortable in closed shoes, long pants, long sleeves, hat and sun glasses.
WE PROVIDE: Insurance, tea, coffee, light refreshments, and free sausage sizzle for all planters (vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, halal options available.)
DETAILS AND A FLYER: Email [email protected] for a flyer with event details, map, bathroom facilities, transport and parking options for the day.
THANK YOU: This event is funded by the City of Marion and proudly supported by the Friends of Sturt River Landcare volunteers.
