About this Event
Children's Relationship to Taste, Ritual & Beauty
Presented by Maddie Friess, Culinary Specialist
Food possesses an incredible quality to bring people together, nourishing our relationships with one another as well as connecting us to community, culture and the natural world. Early childhood educator and culinary specialist Maddie Friess curates a bounty of experiences to invite children to practice mindfulness around eating, investigate ingredients from plant to plate, utilize techniques and tools from the kitchen, cultivate appreciation for the environment, ignite senses to engage with beauty, and encourage sustainable habits. Through a culinary curriculum infused with connection, creation and conservation, children engage with food to expand both their palates and perspectives. Come explore these philosophies of food—hearing stories from the classroom and experiencing a hands-on delight of the senses!
Building a Democratic Society: The Role of Reflection Meeting
Presented by Carol Flanagan, Pedagogista and Selina Smith, Teacher
Reflection Meeting—the daily practice of discussing a problem or idea from the children—promotes the dispositions and competencies necessary for meaningful participation in a democratic society. In this workshop, we share how our daily Reflection Meetings build both intellectual and relational skills as we create a school culture of democratic engagement. We will examine how this daily classroom practice cultivates the knowledge, confidence, dispositions and sense of responsibility that support children as capable citizens and support dialogue, listening and reflection across differing viewpoints. Children are citizens of the here and now, discovering how their voices and actions influence the course of events in their lives. Reflection Meeting is a space where the whole class thinks together and collective knowledge is generated, ending with a shared sense of progress.
