Object Theater for Improvisers
What if a spoon had intentions? What if a chair refused to cooperate?
This workshop invites improvisers to explore the world of object theater, where everyday objects become partners, characters, and sources of narrative. Participants are guided to shift their attention from inventing ideas to listening — cultivating precision, attention, and compositional awareness through the material presence of objects.
Through practical exercises and improvisational structures, performers are introduced to the fundamental principles of object theater and develop concrete skills for animating, composing, and playing with objects on stage. Scenes and situations emerge from the physical dialogue between performer and material, allowing form, weight, rhythm, and resistance to shape the action.
Improvisation and object theater intertwine through a shared commitment to presence and responsiveness: an attention to what is already there, before meaning is assigned. By allowing objects to influence the unfolding of a scene, improvisation gains constraint, poetry, and unexpected dramaturgical pathways.
