About this Event

Torn & Textured is a guided mixed-media workshop focused on physical making—tearing paper, layering materials, and building texture through intuitive composition. This session embraces imperfection and process, using constraint and repetition to quiet overthinking while still producing a finished piece.

This workshop offers more structure and direction while leaving room for personal interpretation. You’ll work with papers, adhesives, and mark-making tools to create depth, contrast, and rhythm—no drawing skill required.

Expect a hands-on, slightly messy, deeply satisfying creative session.

Instrumental, studio-style music plays throughout the workshop to keep energy moving while you work.

Materials

All materials provided. Expect paper, texture elements, adhesives, and tools. Aprons recommended.

Arrival & Setup (10 min)

Info: Guests arrive, choose a workspace, and get oriented. Materials are laid out and ready. Brief informal settling.

Workshop Orientation (10 min)

Info: Overview of the process, materials, and flow of the workshop. A quick look at examples to show range and possibility (not targets). Emphasis on imperfection and layering.

Material Exploration (20 min)

Info: Hands-on time tearing, sorting, and arranging papers and textures. Guests experiment with scale, edges, and contrast without adhering anything yet.

Composition & Layering (30 min)

Info: Begin building compositions through layering and placement. Adhesives are introduced. Focus on balance, rhythm, and texture rather than realism or precision.

Midpoint Reset (10 min)

Info: Short break to step back, hydrate, and look at the work with fresh eyes. Optional adjustments or re-tearing encouraged.

Refinement & Mark-Making (30 min)

Info: Add depth through additional layers, subtle mark-making, or contrast. Guidance is available, but guests work independently at their own pace.

Finishing & Set Time (10 min)

Info: Secure final layers and allow pieces to rest. Optional titles or notes added to the back.

Wrap-Up & Departure (10 min)
