About this Event

Acclaimed Pysanky artist and instructor Jenny Santa Maria returns to BMAC to lead two workshops (11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and 2-4:30 p.m.) in the traditional Ukrainian folk art of egg decoration. Participants can select which session they’d like to attend when registering for the workshop.

Pysanky technique is similar to batik: Patterns are drawn on an egg with hot beeswax, which protects covered areas from subsequent applications of colored dyes. When the wax is removed, a multicolored pattern is revealed. The finished product, with its intricate designs and symbols, belies the meditative process involved. The patience and concentration required to complete a single egg are rewarded when the wax is taken off.

This workshop will include information about the history and traditions surrounding Pysanky, instructions on how to make your own egg, and an independent practice session. The instructor will provide a variety of eggs, many hard-to-find traditional and non-traditional colored dyes, and tools. Participants will leave with a beautiful colored egg. The workshop is open to participants ages 16 and up. No experience is necessary.

Jenny Santa Maria’s eggs have been featured in numerous periodicals, including The Wall Street Journal. She considers her work “batik eggs” because they have a more modern aesthetic and stretch the boundaries of the traditional process. She has been teaching Pysanky for several years in libraries, artist retreats, and museums. Many years ago, she began with private lessons in her living room, and she tries to bring that same special quality to each and every workshop. There is no greater joy for her than keeping this soulful process alive and bringing families together through the arts.

This meditative and communal experience is unlike any other art process, and for many this workshop marks the beginning of a spring time family tradition that can be passed on and enjoyed for years to come.

This event is presented in connection with the BMAC exhibit, Contemporary Ukrainian Folk Art: The Matrix of Resilience.

  • Space is limited. Advance registration required.
