About this Event
Come and discover the understated craft of enamelling with Sheila McDonald, and hear her dicuss the materials, methodology and magic of her work, laid out in her fascinating new book Creative Enamelling. The afternoon will centre around a participatory demonstration which will offer you the chance to create your own piece of enamelwork that you can take home with you.
Sheila McDonald was born in Crail, Scotland, she studied Textile Design at the Glasgow School of Art, and then Silversmithing and Jewellery Design at the Royal College of Art, London. Strong elements of textile, colour and drawing inspire her work. In her enamel pieces which are predominantly silver, she combines several traditional enamel techniques in a painterly way, mixing transparent enamels with layers of fine gold and silver foil. Combining many different technical and enamelling skills with a strong passion for drawing and colour she has the confidence to create new work which is contemporary whilst retaining a strong historical connection to Scottish makers from the past.
Sheila works from her studio in Edinburgh. She is a Freeman of the Goldsmiths Company, London. She is a short course tutor at West Dean College, Chichester and a Guest Fellow at Bishopsland Educational Trust.
