Indonesian vocal workshop for women and gender minorities
About this Event

Guided by two leading Indonesian women composers – Dinar Rizkianti and Gema Swaratyagita – this participatory vocal workshop explores Indonesia’s diverse traditions, heritage and sonic knowledge through improvisation inspired by Nusantara voices.

Location: University of Huddersfield, RSG/01, Richard Steinitz Building, University of Huddersfield

Resonances of Nusantara is an interactive experimental space for exploring Indonesian traditional musical techniques, offering a new approach to improvisation grounded in the sounds of the archipelago and proposing alternative ways of engaging with musical traditions which are often confined to local and conventional contexts. By temporarily freeing traditional techniques from their cultural weight, the workshop creates space for a broader sonic vocabulary for everyone who takes part, encouraging fluid interpretation and exchange.

Through creative sound-making that crosses genre and stylistic boundaries, the workshop aims to open a safe and inclusive space for exploration, welcoming traditional, experimental, and non-specialist participants alike.
