Immerse yourself in this 6 session, 18 hour comprehensive series on learning to draw with artist David Kaarsemaker. You will develop the skills necessary to make a good drawing with materials such as pencils, charcoal, and conte. Source material will include still life arrangements, working from nature, and photographs. The course will focus on line quality, breaking down images into simple shapes, shading techniques, composition, and visual depth as outlined below:
Session 1: Line. Blind contour drawings, time/scale project still life, underlying structures.
Session 2: Shape. Negative space, faceted shapes of the head
Session 3: Form 1. Light and shadow through smudging and erasing. Human figure
Session 4: Form 2. Light and shadow though degrees of pressure and hatching, white conte on mid-tone paper
Session 5: Composition. Toned paper collage and approaches to abstraction. Drawing based on the collage.
Session 6: Visual depth. Ways of increasing the illusion of visual depth.
David Kaarsemaker holds a BFA from Concordia University and an MFA from the University of Ottawa. He has worked as an art educator in a wide range of institutions, including The Vancouver Island School of Art, The Art Gallery of Ontario, Algonquin College, and the University of Ottawa. He is currently a finalist in the 2025 Salt Spring Art Prize and was a finalist in the 2017 RBC Painting Competition. His work is included in the collections of Global Affairs Canada, the City of Ottawa, the City of St John’s, The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery, and the Newfoundland Provincial Art Bank. David’s paintings over the past few years come from ideas and images that arise from the quiet mental states achieved after several days of walking alone on long backpacking trips.
