Introducing the first of the workshops Erika Rudíková will be teaching over here in North Wales, a finely woven curved asymmetric basket incorporating Irish Wale. It incorporates many elements that will be familiar to experienced weavers, with some clever technical details and additions worked out by Erika. This course is suitable for those who have made some round and oval baskets, as you need to be able to control relatively thin stakes. This workshop will run twice, on Saturday/Sunday 23/24 May 2026 near Ruthin (camping or guesthouse accommodation available separately) and also on Wednesday/Thursday 27/28 May at Nannerch.
The cost is £250 including all materials, refreshments and homemade lunches.
Our Tutor
Erika first began working with willow age 17 when she learnt how to make traditional Slovakian Easter whips with fresh willow, and she continued to enjoy making them each year. Then fifteen years ago she came across a new basketry book by fellow Slovakian Peter Juriga, and by following his detailed instructions and photographs successfully made her first basket. This transformed her making, and she became fascinated by the possibilities of the material.
Erika is now an experienced and technically skilled maker, dedicated to learning different techniques and ways of processing willow to make baskets. In March 2025 she was an awarded an Erasmus Plus scholarship and spent three weeks in France focusing on contemporary basketry with one of the masters of the craft, François Desplanches, who described her as a very talented maker.
This is a great opportunity to come and learn with her in a beautiful part of Wales, and to share in her love of willow and of passing on her knowledge and insights to others.
