This is day two of a 2-day course in working with Lime in old buildings. Day two will be a practical course in the use of lime in old buildings. Day one covers theory and a site visit and can be booked separately.
Day 2: Practical Lime Work
Following on from the theory and the site visit on day one, day two is dedicated to the essential role of lime in the construction and maintenance of old buildings. Participants will explore the properties of lime, traditional techniques for its use, and practical applications for restoration and conservation projects. This hands-on course is designed to equip participants with the skills needed to work effectively with lime in heritage contexts.
Course Content:
1. Introduction to Lime
- Historical significance of lime in construction.
- Overview of lime types and their used and application
- Health and safety when working with lime
2. Properties and Benefits of Lime
- Breathability, flexibility, and compatibility with historic materials.
- Environmental advantages of using lime.
3. Preparation and Application Techniques
- Mixing lime mortars and plasters
- Tools of the trade and practical tips.
- Applying lime render and limewash.
- Techniques for repointing with lime mortar.
4. Practical Workshop
- Hands-on session for preparing and applying lime-based materials.
- Background application
- Finishing techniques
- Pointing
- Curing and aftercare
- Discussion and Q&A
