Young Agrarians is excited for a third work party at Ntamtqen Community Garden and Food Hub -formerly the Lower Similkameen Community Food Hub, Farm and Garden!
Come out to lend a hand with spring farm work and building infrastructure to grow Indigenous food sovereignty. Everyone is welcome to attend. There are a variety of tasks to do such as potting up and planting fruit trees, pruning, irrigation, greenhouse work, transplanting seedlings, helping in the kitchen and more.
We can’t wait to gather with you and celebrate spring together!
DATE: April 12-13, 2025. Join for the whole weekend or as much as you’re able to. If you’d like to drop in to help leading up to the event, contact Dixon and Hannah at [email protected] and [email protected], or call 250 681 2626 / 250 408 4300.
LOCATION: Syilx Territory. Cawston, BC (15 mins south of Keremeos)
DIRECTIONS: Unmarked driveway across the road from the Lower Similkameen Indian Band Health, Administration and Community Gym. If coming from Cawston/Keremeos, turn right into the driveway just before the Band Office and school, then take your first left and follow the driveway to Dixon’s house. BRING: Weather and farm-appropriate clothing, footwear (it could be very muddy), and work/gardening gloves. If you have them, please bring hand and power tools (eg. shovels, rakes, impact drivers, impact wrenches, saws, etc.), and personal safety equipment (high-vis, earmuffs, safety glasses, hard hat). Please label equipment beforehand.
If you have extra seeds, pots, plant trays or tools (hoes, trowels, spades, shovels, PPE etc.) you’d like to donate to Ntamtqen, that would be most welcome.
ACCOMMODATIONS: Please arrange your own accommodation. To inquire about staying or camping onsite, please email both Dixon and Hannah at [email protected] and [email protected]. They have bedrooms, trailer space and camping space. You are welcome to stay Friday/Saturday/Sunday night as needed. Young Agrarians is not coordinating accommodations.
MEALS: Meals and snacks will be provided and prepared onsite by volunteers. (Lunch and dinner on Saturday, and breakfast, lunch, and dinner on Sunday).
SPONSORSHIP: We are seeking food donations to feed the volunteers. Meat, vegetables, raw ingredients, dairy, coffee, snacks, baked goods, etc. Please contact Michalina at [email protected] to coordinate.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
-This event is free and open to everyone! Supervised children are welcome
-Please leave furry friends at home
-Please stay home if you have cold or flu symptoms
-Please wash your shoes before visiting the farm, especially if you work on or have visited a farm recently
-Please do not bring alcohol to this event
-Please share this event with anyone who may be interested!
About Ntamtqen Community Garden:
Ntamtqen Community Garden and Food Hub is indigenous led on the unceded traditional territory of the Syilx people.
At the heart of Ntamtqen Community Garden is to:
produce healthy food for the community and grow native plants, building food security and sovereignty
create business and employment opportunities, and
create spaces for education, collaboration and gathering.
This provides a range of social, economic and health benefits with and for community members centred on Indigenous food security and sovereignty. The food hub farm and garden will enable opportunities for passing on traditional knowledge of food gathering and processing through the generations; create business and employment opportunities for the community; teach skills, host skill shares and deliver farming/growing education; and host gatherings and social events, weaving in arts and culture.
