Nicky is a freelance Community Music Worker who specialises in bringing people together to share the joy and emotional benefits of music, creativity and collaboration, while encouraging them to express themselves in a playful way. An invitation to act as a musical mentor on a songwriting residential for Leeds Beckett University students in 2013 inspired her to cofound the songwriters’ open mic Tower of Song, which challenges musicians of all abilities to write songs inspired by a given theme and genre each month (based on audience suggestions) and provides a supportive and inclusive space in which to perform them.
This has provided a rich source of inspiration for her own songwriting, as a humorous musical storyteller who explores weird and wonderful subject matter while experimenting with different musical styles. She enjoys the beauty of simple chord progressions coupled with catchy vocal melodies, having fun with language, rhythm and rhyme, and incorporating creative ways to involve the audience. Her performance style is visual and energetic; she never misses an opportunity to whip out a prop, and her collection of comedy headwear is ever-expanding.
Over the past 30 years she has also sung, played and run amok in various bands, including mischievous Nintendo-electro-pop duo Bonsai Kittens, and The Pop-Up People, whose merrily madcap live outings featured themes such as 'Disney vs Crimewatch' and the occasional crisp-throwing riot. She currently tinkles the ivories in fun party covers band Penny and the Sausages, and occasionally channels her inner John Deacon in all-female guitarless Queen tribute act Where’s Brian? alongside her little sister on drums.
