About this Event

Join us for our Words of Protest – Words of Witness writing workshop, 25 free places are available. The workshop is open to anyone age 18+ who wants to explore the relationship between writing and protest. No previous writing experience is needed.

The Harbourside Pavilion is at 1 Hannover Quay, Bristol, BS1 5JE a 10-minute walk from the city centre. The event space is located above Spitfire Barbecue and accessed via a door at the back of the building. Details of how to access the location will be sent to ticket holders a few days before the event.

About the workshop

The public killing of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter protests led to a heightened consciousness of the injustices and inequalities that people of colour experience.

In these times of unrest, writing offers us an avenue for reflection and conversation around this deeply complex and painful discourse. Whether we want to write poetry, prose or letters this event offers an opportunity to explore the relationship between writing and protest.

The event and exercises also invite reflection on people as active citizens or bystanders and on words as capable of influencing positive change.

The event will start with conversation and poetry readings around the Black Lives Matter: Poems for a New World anthology (2020). This will be followed by a workshop where participants will have an opportunity to write through a series of reflections, exercises and writing prompts.

Our workshop leads

Ambrose Musiyiwa is a poet and a journalist. He facilitates CivicLeicester, a community media channel that uses events, social media and print and digital technologies to highlight conversations taking place in and around Leicester. He has edited anthologies that include Black Lives Matter: Poems for a New World (CivicLeicester, 2020) and Poetry and Settled Status for All (CivicLeicester, forthcoming).

Catherine Okoronkwo is a Swindon-based writer and Church of England priest. She uses poetry and prose to document her observations on injustices, bearing witness and making visible that which lurks in the shadows.

Black Lives Matter: Poems for a New World, published in November 2020, presents poems and short prose from around the world responding to Black Lives Matter.

All levels and abilities are welcome to attend, no previous writing experience is needed.
