Behind the Camouflage....."For as long as most of us can remember, the armed forces have been built around the idea of masculinity — strength, confidence, aggression, a tight-knit brotherhood. And the British Armed Forces are no different, where women making up no more than13% of serving personnel.
Back in 1993, Sarah applied to join the Royal Air Force — and to her own surprise, she got in. Fast forward 33 years and she’s served in Iraq, Afghanistan, the Falklands, the Balkans, Northern Ireland. She’s seen the best and the worst of military life, so she is well placed to pull back the camouflage and talk honestly about what it’s like to live and work in uniform as a woman.
She’ll talk about the compromises you make, the things you quietly push back against, and the moments of grit and humour that get you through. And she’ll share why, after three decades, even though she is a full time photographer, she still chooses to wear the uniform on a part time basis."
