This is a two session class combining a visit to a UAF lab to look through microscopes at a variety of interesting specimens and a printmaking session to translate science into art. No experience required! Lab Session: Join UAF biologists for training in microscopy and to view an array of live and preserved microorganisms. Feel free to bring your own items to explore under the microscope as well, for example:
aquarium water with algae
samples of moldy bread, fruit or vegetables
other sources of fungi
Printmaking Studio Session: During the session together in the studio, we will first demonstrate the relief printing process to the class. The students will then learn how to translate their experience of the lab session into a drawing. This will be transferred onto their wood block in preparation for carving, inking, then printing the block. Students will make prints for themselves to take home along with the carved block (which can then be used to print other items). We will be carving on small birch rounds (tree cookies) for these prints.
Cost: Pay What You Can – minimum of $15 to cover materials. Suggested registration fee is $83 plus materials, for a total cost of $98.
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: The Folk School will never ask for payment information via FaceBook or venmo. You can only register for a class via our website or in person at our cabin.
