Wood Porch Construction — Hands-On Workshop (DTC)Build a safe, long-lasting wood porch from the ground up! This hands-on workshop walks you through planning, layout, framing, decking, stairs, and railings—so you leave confident to tackle a real project at home or on the job.
What you’ll learn
Planning & Codes: sizing, load paths, basic code considerations, permits, and safety.
Site Layout & Footings: squaring a layout, digging/setting footings, drainage basics.
Posts, Beams & Ledger: proper ledger attachment and flashing, post anchoring, beam assembly.
Joist Framing: spacing, blocking, hangers, and preventing bounce/sag.
Decking Installation: board layout, gapping, fasteners, and hidden systems.
Stairs & Railings: stringer layout, guard/handrail standards, secure connections.
Weatherproofing & Finish: flashing details, end-grain sealing, stain/sealant selection, ongoing maintenance.
Materials we’ll work with
Lumber: pressure-treated posts, beams, joists, and decking (plus options like cedar/composite comparisons).
Hardware & Connectors: joist hangers, post bases/anchors, structural screws/bolts, corrosion-resistant fasteners (hot-dipped galvanized or coated).
Concrete & Footing Forms: premix concrete, tubes, gravel base.
Moisture Control: flashing, flashing tape, sill gasket, drip edges.
Finishes: exterior stain/sealant, brushes/rollers.
Tools & Safety: levels, squares, circular saws, impact drivers, PPE (gloves, glasses, hearing protection).
