About the show: With this exhibition, we ask the viewer to step into a surreal dreamscape where mystical creatures roam within sci-fi landscapes and hidden ecosystems. Step into the imaginations of these four artists, who each share a wondrous talent for coming up with wild flora and fauna, expansive environments, and mixed-reality playgrounds of myth and mystery.
About the Artists:
Amelia Opie- Sidestreet member, Amelia Opie, hails from a family filled with artists and has a solid lifelong background in painting. She has recently started to translate her painted fantastical beasts into the three dimensions of ceramics. Amelia loves the ease of use and level of detail she can achieve with acrylics, and has maintained the vibrancy of her color palette in clay. She finds universal appeal in animals as subjects, and loves to paint them in their home environments, often busily engaging in various activities or play. More of her work can also be found on Instagram, @threepawprints or on her website www.ameliaopie.com
Erika Rier- Erika Rier is a self-taught interdisciplinary artist creating paintings, ceramics, and art zines in a style she calls folk surrealism. Writing was her first love and she still secretly writes stories. Having lived in Maine, Vermont, Connecticut, NYC, Arizona, and Washington state, Erika now resides in Portland, OR. She also has one of each of the following: a husband, a daughter, and a cat she found in a hallway. @erika_rier
Jeanne Steffan- Jeanne Steffan is an artist living and working in Portland, Oregon. Her paintings created for this show are inspired by the depiction of natural forms existing in improbable worlds. She enjoys combining past and future settings where unlikely, if not impossible, scenes can be viewed as acceptable. In her words, “Painting is a medium which can convince us that anything is possible within the realm of illusion”. Steffan’s work reminds us to be grounded, while allowing our imaginations to dream. Many of these pieces are titled as metaphors. Like many previous cultures, she invites us to enjoy imagery rather than words to communicate ideas that are sometimes beyond our grasp. @jeannesteffanart
Matt Anderson- Matthew Anderson is a sculptor working primarily in ceramics. He takes inspiration from both the natural and man-made world to explore concepts of the self, the other, and belonging. He currently resides in Portland, Oregon. @sedentary.ceramics
