Women's Sacred Dirty Dance: Dancing in the Dark

Location: Sol Dance – 1475 Fairview Rd #221 (Upstairs Studio), Penticton
There are so few places that women can feel truly safe to move and be free. This event is a sacred evening for women to connect with themselves, each other, and of course, to dance as you please to deep and dirty dance beats as we playfully rewire our relationships with the darkness.
This is the 9th time we are hosting this gathering, and we are so excited to come together again. The evening will be hosted by Emma, Heidi, and Vaelei.
Our theme “Dancing in the Dark” invites us into the terrain where shadow and light meet. As Richard Rudd (Gene Keys) reminds us, our awakening is found not by bypassing the dark, but by softening into it. Through powerful songs, movement, breath, community, and play, we’ll explore a path that embraces the wholeness of our feminine nature, including the wild, gritty, and unfiltered parts that long to dance unapologetically.
Why Dirty?
The word “dirty” has been used to shame women for ages. However, in Women Who Run with the Wolves, the chapter “The Dirty Goddess” speaks to this untamed feminine spirit that defies societal constraints. There’s a part of every woman that revels in the raw and the real.
Together, we reclaim the word “dirty” as sacred — like the earth beneath our feet, primal and holy. This is a night to honor that part of ourselves: to move, to sweat, to feel, to laugh, and to remember.
What to Expect
- We’ll begin with a thoughtful discussion to explore our relationship to the word “dirty,” and the concept of the "dark".
- As we begin we will drop into a personal journey of guided movement & breathwork to awaken and ground the body, soften the edges, and open the channels for deeper movement.
- Then, we’ll flow into an free dance journey, where movement and play become tools for transformation.
- As we journey deeper, we’ll explore through our dance our personal relationship to the dark—not to escape it, but to lean in, listen, and integrate its teachings.
What to Bring
- A blindfold, lightweight scarf, or bandana
- A water bottle to stay hydrated
What to Wear
- Dress in whatever makes you feel like your most favorite self that day.
- For this “Dancing in the Dark” theme, we recommend dark earthy colors to honor the season and the shadowy beauty of this theme.
No Dance Experience Needed
This dance evening has its own style of ecstatic dance.
Ecstatic dance is a freeform, non-structured movement practice where you are invited move in response to music without choreography or judgment.
It’s a space of personal expression, mindfulness, and connection, often experienced as a form of moving meditation and self-exploration.
