About this Event
PLEASE NOTE: The talk was originally listed for March 7th, 2026 but is now scheduled for March 22nd, 2026.
WHAT TO EXPECT: Bowne House Archivist Charlotte Jackson will speak on the remarkable lives of John Bowne’s first wife, the pioneering Quaker preacher Hannah Feake Bowne, and her legendary mother, Elizabeth Fones-Winthrop-Feake-Hallett, aka “The Winthrop Woman.” Learn how Elizabeth defied patriarchal Puritan custom to live and love on her own terms, and how Hannah’s upbringing in her care may have shaped her independent spirit and religious vocation.
A question period will follow. In-person attendees may also take a tour of Bowne House and view pieces from the Bowne House Collection that were owned, used, or enjoyed by generations of Bowne House women.
All participants under 14 years old MUST be accompanied by an adult.
