Women Under Jihadist Governance: Conflict, Terrorism, and Lived Realities How do women experience insurgent governance in their everyday lives?
About this Event

Please join the Security Studies Program for this upcoming CSS Speaker Series event, “Women Under Jihadist Governance: Conflict, Terrorism, and Lived Realities in the Central Sahel.”

Sahel researcher, Corinne Dufka, has spent decades researching conflict and the rise of terrorism in West Africa. Her most recent report - Peuhl Women’s Lives Under JNIM in the Central Sahel -- is based on in-depth interviews with some 80 women, including the wives, mothers and sisters of jihadist operatives who spoke candidly about their comparative experiences of life under both the state(s) and al-Qaeda affiliate, Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, (JNIM.)

This Event is Ideal For

Students of terrorism and security studies will appreciate the rare window into how women (and their community) have experienced day-to-day governance under the group, including JNIM policies bringing value to their lives and the village-level factors driving recruitment. The discussion will be ideal for students of terrorism policy, counter-terrorism approaches, jihadist governance, and the gender and terrorism nexus.

About the Report

The study contributes to the gender and terrorism nexus, but its key added value is in understanding the reasons for JNIM’s resonance in West Africa, terrorism’s fastest growing theatre. The recommendations include rebuilding state legitimacy through ensuring restraint in counterterrorism operations and providing reliable, transparent service delivery that reflect women's and communities’ daily priorities.

The research was funded by the United Kingdom’s XCEPT Program, jointly published by the Policy Center for the New South, and included contributions from researchers Niccola Milnes and Rida Lyammouri.
