ANNE ABERNATHY

6 Time Winter Olympian - Luge

World Ranked Archer

Ageless Athlete

Her first six Olympics were in the Winter Games where Anne competed as a luge athlete from the US Virgin Islands. After making a full recovery from a devastating luge accident in the 2006 Torino Olympic Games, Anne switched to the sport of Olympic Recurve Archery.

Now as a 14-year veteran and World Ranked Archer on the US Virgin Islands National Team; she competes on the World Cup, Masters and Senior Games circuit. Despite having both knees replaced in 2022 she defended her 3-time National State Games Championship title, qualified for her 3rd Central America & Caribbean Games, 6th Pan Am Championships and the 2023 Pan Am Games. She is a Pan American Master’s Games Champion, USA Archery Virtual Indoor Champion, and multiple World Senior Games Champion. In November 2023 Anne and her teammate won the first ever Pan Am Field Championships Mixed Team Gold medal in Iguazu, Argentina.

Anne’s path to her remarkable accomplishments has been anything but easy. In addition to over 32 knee surgeries, in 2001, Anne suffered a severe brain injury in a World Cup crash. Her incredible recovery was featured on the Discovery Health Channel Series Impact: Stories of Survival. Prior to her first Olympic appearance in 1988, Anne was diagnosed with lymphoma. Although the cancer has returned several times during her sports career, Anne has never let it slow her down.

Anne Abernathy is not only an inspiration; she is a living testimony to the simple principle that we do not have to be defined by our age.

Anne is a seasoned—and very entertaining—speaker and professional spokesperson. She has been featured frequently in national and international media including appearances on The Today Show, The Tonight Show, Good Morning America, MSNBC, CNN Headline News, Fox Sports, and many others. She has also served as an expert sports commentator on CBS and the BBC. More recently, she was the feature story for “Power for Living”, a publication distributed to over 700 churches in the US and Canada.

A recipient of numerous awards, including the International Luge Federation (FIL) Medal of Honor, she was selected as the Athletes International 2004 Olympic Athlete of the Year. She is also a two-time nominee for the prestigious International Olympic Committee Women in Sports Award. Anne was chosen as one of the top 100 female athletes for the 2006 Women’s Sports Foundation “Parade of Champions”. Anne’s achievements have earned her a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest as well as first woman to compete in 6 Winter Olympics.
