Part 1 - Lincoln Park to Echo Park Lake - Flat at first then some hills and stairs in the second half. Starting at the park at 8 am, we walk half way around the lake, visiting the Florence Nightingale WPA funded statue, then proceeding west past The Brewery Arts Complex, visiting Los Angeles State Historic Park (with a water/restroom break), Chinatown Central Plaza, Alpine Hill, Angelino Heights (and Victorian homes), ending at Echo Park Lake at the Boathouse, itself a 1937 WPA funded project! Distance 4.8 miles End time: ~10am
Part 2 - Echo Park Lake to Wiltern Theatre - Mostly flat, with one hill and stairs. Starting at the Boathouse at 10:10am, we walk over to the "Lady of the Lake" WPA statue, whose real name is Our Queen of the Angels. From there we walk some stairs and a ped bridge over the I-101 freeway to head through Filipinotown to reach the northeast corner of MacArthur Park, passing The MacArthur building and briefly visiting the park. Then we walk over to Lafayette Park, with Lafayette WPA statue, to visit the New Deal funded Power of Water sculpture and continue on Wilshire Blvd past the spectacular Art Deco Bullocks Wilshire building, and two churches and one synagogue as we work our way to the fabulous Art Deco WIltern Theatre. In case you didn't know, WILTERN = WILshire + wesTERN! We stop across the street at the Wilshire/Western Purple Line terminus station, and take a 1 hour break for lunch. Distance 4.3 miles End time: noon
Part 3 - Wiltern Theatre to Hollywood and Highland - Very flat until the last 1.5 miles. Starting at 1pm, we head west on Wilshire and pass the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple before reaching the Ebell of Los Angeles, an historic woman's club, which will NOT let us into their courtyard, so we will skip the Fountain of Honor sculpture. From there we head north to Larchmont Village with its cool town center vibe, and continue north to Melrose, then Vine street, taking a snack/restroom break at the Starbucks at Camford Ave. From there we continue north on Vine to Hollywood Blvd and jog over to Ivar Ave to climb the hill to local resident Sam Fuller's Tiny Garden. Next we head through Whitley Heights traversing two stairways on our way to the tunnel under Highland leading to the Hollywood Bowl and our last WPA statue, the Muse of Music. The final part of the walk is a short downhill trek to the Hollywood and Highland mall and metro station where Part 3 concludes. Distance: 6 miles End time: 3:30pm
