In this talk, Reg Harris will review the accomplishments of a selection of brilliant, independent-minded, female botanists of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.It will touch on, amongst other things: their illustrative and technical expertise in portraying plants, their detailed knowledge of hundreds of plant species, botanical publishing, botanical field exploration and discovery, and scientific research and development.
Their work had far-reaching benefits on, amongst other things, the economic development of their countries, conservation management, and higher education.
One of the ‘Sisterhood’ received the Nobel Prize. Others gained ‘high office’ in various learned societies and institutions.
Several New Zealand botanists will be highlighted.
