About this Event
Presented by special guest speaker Annabelle Tonkin, this talk will delve into the tenacity, courage, and ingenuity of women who pursued artistic careers in Queensland during the early 20th century. Working through decades marked by war, conservatism, and shifting social norms, these artists forged paths that challenged the expectations placed on women at the time.
As opportunities for travel expanded, many encountered new ideas and stylistic movements abroad that shaped their practices on return. These influences sparked a dynamic negotiation between modernism and tradition, and between artistic ambition and the cultural conservatism of the local art scene.
Alongside their creative work, many were also active in advocacy and education, playing a vital role in the development of Queensland’s visual arts landscape. From formal public memorials and commemorative portraits to more personal subjects like still life and domestic interiors, their art balanced individual expression with broader social commentary.
Featuring artists such as Daphne Mayo, Vida Lahey, Kathleen Shillam, Gwendolyn Grant, Bessie Gibson and others, this is a story of determination, education, and creative vision during a pivotal moment in Queensland’s art history.
After the talk, visitors can stay to explore the Memorial Galleries, embarking on an interactive journey from the First World War to today, before taking time to reflect on the remarkable stories of bravery and sacrifice in the tranquil parklands.
Anzac Square Memorial Galleries is located at 285 Ann Street, Brisbane. Entry is through the double brass doors located beneath the Shrine of Remembrance.
