Womanimation! is premiere showcase in the US of women’s animated short films, an international competitive festival, in its 15th year.
About this Event

What is Womanimation? As the name implies, it’s an international competitive festival showcasing acclaimed animated films created by women from around the world, a celebration of the story-telling power of animation, particularly in the short form.

The Animation Department at MassArt is pleased to partner with MergingArts Productions to host the Womanimation! 2026 Film Festival, the premiere showcase in the United States of women’s animated short films. Animation aficionados will enjoy a select program of ten films from eight countries, culled from hundreds of submissions from across the globe.

The festival will be held on Saturday April 25th from 3:00pm to 5:00pm in the Design and Media Center (DMC) Lecture Hall, on 621 Huntington Avenue in Boston. The event is free and open to the MassArt community and the general public.

In the length of a typical 90-minute feature film, the films entertain and challenge the audience, with visual styles from stop motion to computer animation to hand-drawn 2D, frequently blending styles and materials to achieve distinctive looks. The audience votes for their favorite three films of the program, with the top overall vote-getter receiving a custom art object award, created by a winner from the previous year's festival.

A special jury, consisting of selected women musicians who have topped one of the MergingArts Global Radio weekly charts, review and rate the films. The Jury Grand Prize Award winner also receives a commissioned custom art object award created by a previous Womanimation! Film Festival winner.

A slideshow introducing the filmmakers will precede the program and DJ Madame B will weave soundscapes created by women across the globe before and after the screening. Festival organizers from MergingArts Productions, which produces the festival, will be in attendance to introduce the program.
