Our keynote speaker is Dr. Julia Myers O'Brien, who grew up in parsonages of the Southern Conference while her father, the Rev. Harold Myers, served congregations in Raleigh, Burlington, Thomasville, and China Grove. Her brother, Rev. Phil Myers, pastored in Concord and Burlington before accepting a call to Virginia Beach.
Dr. Myers held the position of Paul H. and Grace L. Stern Professor of Hebrew Bible at Lancaster Theological Seminary from 1997 to 2024. From 1989 to 1996, she was Associate Professor and Department Head at Meredith College. She received the B.A. in Religion from Wake Forest University in 1981, the M.Div. from Duke Divinity School in 1984, and the PhD in Hebrew Bible and Semitic Studies from Duke University in 1988.
A specialist in Hebrew Bible prophetic literature, she has written numerous commentaries, monographs, articles, book reviews, and essays, and has also edited major volumes. Most recently, she published Prophets Beyond Activism: Rethinking the Prophetic Roots of Social Justice (Westminster John Knox, 2024) and served as Associate Editor of the New Oxford Annotated Bible, sixth edition (forthcoming, 2026). She is currently finishing a commentary on Isaiah 40-66 for the Interpretation Bible Commentary series.
