About this Event
Explore the history behind the world of "A Lamentable Tragedy" with Dr Martin Roberts' lecture on wives, wills and wool, and providing an introduction to the Church courts of the medieval diocese of Lincoln.
Biography
Martin Roberts is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the School of Humanities and Heritage. His Fellowship has been funded by an award from the Lincoln Record Society’s Nigel Burn Memorial Research Grant Scheme and its project is also endorsed by the Ecclesiastical History Society. After a first degree from the University of Leeds (LLB Hons, 1984), professional qualifications from the College (now University) of Law (Solicitors' Finals 1985), and a successful career in a leading Lincolnshire law firm, Martin retired early in 2013 to pursue further study. Graduating from Lincoln (MA Medieval Studies, 2015), and completing his doctorate at the University of Nottingham (March 2020), his research focusses upon ecclesiastical justice in late medieval and early modern England and he is especially working towards publication (in the Lincoln Record Society Main Series) of an edition of unpublished records from the Bishop of Lincoln’s Audience Court created during the first six decades of the sixteenth century.
This lecture is part of "A Lamentable Tragedy" Peformance and Lecture Series at Lincoln's Historic Guildhall as part of Lincoln's 2026 Festival of History.
