Elena Griffis has been a Labor & Delivery RN since becoming a nurse in 2000. Learning from some very influential nurses she became the Perinatal Loss Coordinator in May 2020 at Frederick Health Hospital. There, she increased and streamlined resources for her patients, strengthened relationships with the ED and OR teams and provided resources for both inpatient and outpatient patients. Elena saw a void in the community when her patients were discharged and in turn, became researching and planning outpatient supports. As a result, she decided to create a non profit to fund and support her vision to increase support to the community. In July 2025, The Sophia Ann Charity was founded and her dream took off.
Part of her vision was to open a perinatal mental health center for Frederick and the surrounding communities. In October of 2025, her vision came true with the grand opening of The Sophia Center! Here, they provide therapies, support groups, education for practitioners, and advocacy for all no matter their ability to pay. Funded by the Sophia Ann Charity, it is a vital part of support in the Frederick Community and beyond.
When not at work and helping the community, Elena is busy with her family of 10. She leans on her husband Barclay to support her and their kids.
Excited about what the future holds, Elena can’t wait to touch the lives of the Frederick community and beyond.
