Twenty-Third Annual Wisconsin Association of Chinese Language Teachers Speech and Pronunciation Contest

Saturday, April 18th, 2026

We are pleased to announce the 23rd Annual Wisconsin Chinese Language Speech Contest. This contest welcomes students from Kindergarten to College level, from beginners to heritage/native speakers. Participants can deliver speeches, recitations or tell stories . So, start encouraging and preparing your students to participate in this fun event now!

We would like to showcase some cultural performances at the event so if you know of any individuals or students who would like to perform, kindly contact our board team at [email protected].

We are looking for judges for this event, so please contact us if you or anyone you know are interested in taking on this role.

Tentative time schedule:

9:00 - 9:30-Judges arrive for briefing/On-site check in

9:30 - 10:30 - Opening Ceremony

10:30 - 12:00-Speeches, individual break-up rooms

12:00 -1:30 - Judges conference

We do our very best to place students in groups of comparable age and ability. Please read the descriptions below and select the ones that BEST describe the applicant.

Definition of Heritage Categories (please select the option that BEST describes the applicant)

  • Heritage: Parents or guardians speak Chinese at home.
  • Non-Heritage: Parents or guardians do not speak Chinese at home.

Definition of Age Groups

  • LLE - Prek, K and 1st Grade
  • LE - Lower Elementary - 2nd to 3rd Grade
  • UE - Upper Elementary: 4th to 5th Grade
  • MS - Middle School: 6th to 8th Grade
  • HS - High School: 9th to 12th Grade
  • UNI - University Students

Definition of Skill Levels for Non-Heritage Students

  • Beginner: Student is in 1st year of Chinese language study
  • Intermediate - Low (only for high school ) : Students is in 2nd year of Chinese language study
  • Intermediate - High (only for high school): Student is in 3rd year of Chinese language study
  • Advanced: Student is in 4th year or beyond of Chinese language study

Teacher Sponsorship

All participants must be students of a teacher who is a WACLT member. Teachers, please make sure your WACLT membership is current. You may pay dues on this site (select 'WACLT Membership dues').

Payment Method

We ONLY accept online payments.

Chinese Speech Contest Expectations

  • Students prepare a 1-3 minute speech on a topic of their choice.
  • Students should write their own speeches. No reciting of poems, essays, songs, stories, or anything that is not the student’s own original work (This applies to Middle School, High School and University contestants only).
  • Speech should be fully memorized to demonstrate the student’s level of fluency. Notecards may be used if necessary, but may significantly lower the score.

Respect the registration deadline of March 30th at midnight.

  • All registration fees must be paid before the speech contest. Students who do not pay prior to the start of the contest will be ineligible to compete.
