The Readfield Historical Society (RHS) and the Winthrop Maine Historical Society (WMHS) will co-host two programs on March 14th and April 9th in recognition of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. Mary Richards from WMHS and Dale Potter-Clark from the RHS explained the decision was made to co-host because Readfield was still a part of Winthrop during the Revolutionary War, and remained so until 1791.
On March 14th Norn Kalloch, author and historian from the Arnold Expedition Historical Society (AEHS) will present about Benedict Arnold’s 1775 epic march up the Kennebec River, through the Maine wilderness and southern Canada to seize Quebec City. His presentation will include events leading up to the Arnold Expedition and General George Washington’s orders for conducting the excursion. Kalloch serves as a knowledgeable guide for AEHS hikes. He has also authored several books about the Maine wilderness, which will be available for sale after the program and signed on request. RHS will hold a brief business meeting and election of officers at 1:00 p.m. followed by the program. Refreshments will be served. This meeting will be held at Gile Hall, 8 Old Kents Hill Road in Readfield. The storm date is March 28th, if postponement is necessary that will be posted on the RHS and the WMHS facebook pages. FMI contact Potter-Clark at [email protected] or (207) 441-9184.

On April 9th Sara Donovan, a living history historian and re-enactor from the Arnold Expedition Historical Society (AEHS), will talk about the involvement of the four women who went on Benedict Arnold’s Expedition. Donovan’s participation in a 2021 AEHS reenactment led her to research other period accounts to find out what the women were likely wearing. Her further involvement in AEHS re-enactments while dressed in period garb gave her a whole new perspective on the expedition. During the program, Donovan will appear in period garb she sewed herself, using traditional methods of the Revolutionary period. This presentation will take place at 6:00 p.m. at the Winthrop History and Heritage Center, 107 Main Street Winthrop. FMI contact Mary Richards [email protected] ~ (207) 395-5199.
The public is welcome at both programs. There is no entrance fee but donations are welcome.
