Winter Wilderness Series (Ages 10–16)Give your child the chance to build confidence, resilience, and real outdoor skills this winter! In this 6-week series, participants will explore Thrive Outdoors’ Big Five foundations of wilderness living—Mindset, Shelter, Fire, Water, and Food—through hands-on adventures in the Greater Concord/Manchester area. Each session blends a practical survival skill with a powerful life lesson, helping youth discover strength, teamwork, and resourcefulness in the outdoors.
Whether we’re hiking frozen trails, learning to build a shelter, purifying water, or cooking a meal over a fire, every class teaches kids how to stay calm, think clearly, and work together—even when conditions get tough. This series empowers youth to embrace the wild, build wilderness skills safely, and cultivate resilience they can carry into everyday life.
Jan 3 – Mindset & Winter Hike, Oak Hill, Concord
Start the series with a winter hike focused on building a strong outdoor mindset. We’ll explore how confidence, attitude, and preparation help us meet challenges—both on the trail and in daily life.
Jan 10 – Shelter: Build Like the Animals, Broken Ground, Concord
Learn how animals like beavers build shelters that help them survive winter. Then, as a team, we’ll create our own shelter and explore how protection, teamwork, and problem-solving keep us safe in any environment.
Jan 17 – Fire: Fuel, Warmth & Focus, Bear brook state park
Learn how to safely start and maintain a winter fire, use a camp stove, and cook outdoors. We’ll discuss how fire can be both life-giving and destructive—and what that teaches us about passion, emotions, and self-control.
Jan 24 – Water: Finding, Understanding & Adapting, Massabesic Audubon Center, Auburn
Explore winter water sources, practice purification techniques, and learn how to read a topographic map using waterways for navigation.
Jan 31 – Food: Winter Foraging & Outdoor Cooking, Location: TBD
Discover what food sources survive in winter & learn the basics of cold-season foraging. We’ll cook over a fire and backpacking stove while exploring how animals stay resourceful & nourished through the colder months.
Feb 7 – Final Hike & Wrap-Up (Makeup Day), Pulpit Rock, Bedford
Celebrate the series with a scenic winter hike and group reflection on everything learned. This date also serves as a weather makeup day if any earlier sessions are postponed.
