About this Event
Event Photos

All are welcome to join this walk to celebrate the shortest day of the year. A walk steeped in fascinating history, including neolithic bowl barrows and a chambered tomb, a thirteeth century church and a medieval settlement. These are just some of the gems that Dr Tim will be talking to us about. We'll also learn about the significance of the Winter Solstice to our ancestors and if you're into the spiritual side of things, be sure to bring some Citrine to charge in the Solstice sun (finger's crossed!).

Distance: 5.5 miles/9km

Level: Easy/Moderate/Challenging: Mostly easy footpaths and trails with a couple of short, steep sections. We take these very steadily so even if you're new to walking/hiking, you'll find this fairly easy.

Elevation: 1000ft/800m

Time: 4-5hours

Who will be your guide?

I’m Emily, founder of Peak Outdoor Coaching, and Mountain Leader based in Glossop at the edge of the Dark Peak. I’ve always been outdoorsy since being a young girl but hiking became a real obsession in 2019 when I started to go solo. I aim to inspire others to learn the many benefits of exploring in the outdoors and I’m passionate about sharing my love for adventure with you!

Feel free to check out my website: Peak Outdoor Coaching and follow us on Instagram and Facebook: @peakoutdoorcoaching

Transport:

We'll be meeting at Wyedale Car Park - Peak District NPA6, Buxton SK17 9TE Google Maps

We will meet at 8.45am and be leaving at 9am.

We highly recommend car sharing so please drop me a message if you would like to be added to the car share group chat.

What to bring:

  • Hiking boots or shoes with good grip and ankle support
  • Snacks/lunch to sustain you for around 4-5 hours
  • Rucksack
  • Water (at least 1.5L)
  • Waterproofs
  • Warm layers (there will be lots of stopping to listen to Tim)
  • Hat and gloves
  • A small first aid kit with any personal medications
  • Walking poles, sit mat, hot drink (optional extras)

Terrain:

Mostly trails and footpaths. Some uphill sections and some parts with uneven terrain. There are a few stiles on this route.

Toilets:

There are no toilets at the car park. There are none along the route, but I will point out discreet spots for 'wild wees'! We do pass a pub about half way round, which may let us use their facilities (excuse for a swift half?!)

Safety:

The whole point of our walks is that they are enjoyable and memorable experiences for everyone so we will keep to a slow and steady pace. It's about taking in the views, learning about the history and geology of the area and being in nature, not about rushing to the finish line. Having said that, you are responsible for your own health and safety and with all outdoor activities, there can be risks involved. If you are unsure as to whether you are fit to come on this walk, please either consult your doctor or let us know your concerns. Please inform us of any medical conditions prior to the walk. Every participant MUST complete this Medical & Disclaimer Form a minimum of 24 hours before the event begins.

Our leaders are qualified Hill and Moorland or Mountain Leaders and level 3 Outdoor First Aid trained so they will be on hand in case of an emergency.

Dogs:

Well-behaved dogs are welcome (barking will be an issue while we're listening to Dr Tim!) but they will need to be on a short lead for the entire walk.

Refund Policy*:

Refunds will only be given if the event is cancelled. If you can no longer attend you are more than welcome to sell your ticket to someone else but please let me know if you do so. No swaps to other events.

And FINALLY:

This walk will be going ahead whatever the weather, unless I deem the conditions dangerous so be ready to embrace the good old British weather! If I do have to cancel the walk for safety reasons, I will suggest one more date for the walk to be rearranged or you can redeem your ticket on one other walk on a date suitable to you.
