Through the Shop Window to a joyful close beneath the Colonnade on Spring Gardens, filling the air with festive cheer and community spirit. Established in 1861, Burbage Brass Band is one of the oldest and most respected brass bands in the High Peak area. Founded by local quarry owner Robert Broome and fellow industrialists, the band has a proud tradition of teaching music free of charge, fostering community spirit, and entertaining audiences both locally and beyond. Known for their friendly atmosphere and musical versatility, the band continues to nurture players of all ages and skill levels.
The Colonnade stands near the site of the former Royal Hotel, once a grand centrepiece of Spring Gardens.
A fixture of Spring Gardens since the early 20th century, W.Appleyards & Son is one of Buxton’s longest-standing independent shops. While its heritage lies in traditional tobacconist trade, today it’s better known for its eclectic mix of gifts, toys, and model kits, offering everything from classic board games and puzzles to Airfix kits and collectible curiosities. The shop’s vintage signage and wooden counters evoke a bygone era, making it a nostalgic stop for locals and visitors alike. Still independently run by Emma and Martin Olsson, Appleyards continues to serve the community with a blend of old-fashioned charm, its shelves are a treasure trove for hobbyists, gift-seekers, and anyone drawn to the tactile joy of well-made things.
La Gaby is a family-run pizzeria offering authentic Neapolitan-style pizza, prepared with care and fired in a traditional Italian brick oven. Their dough is nurtured for over 48 hours to create a light, airy crust, topped with fresh ingredients sourced from Italy and the Peak District. With a warm atmosphere and heartfelt service, La Gaby is a tribute to Mediterranean traditions and local hospitality.
Just steps away, Onnen offers a relaxed, European-style wine bar and bottle shop. Known for its organic and natural wines, craft beers, and mellow ambiance, Onnen is a neighbourhood favourite for casual drinks and conversation. Its outdoor seating and soft evening lighting make it a perfect spot to linger after the music fades.
As the brass band plays beneath the Colonnade, visitors are invited to stroll Spring Gardens, reflect on Buxton’s past, and celebrate the present with good food, good company, and the joy of shared experience.
