Celebrate the longest night of the year with Cranbrook Institute of Science and Cranbrook Art Museum!
You’re invited to join us on Saturday, December 20 from 11:00am to 5:00pm for our annual Winter Solstice Celebration—enjoy two incredible experiences for the price of one!
One ticket, two locations, endless discovery! A short, scenic walk links both Institutions, letting you experience science, art, and nature in one magical winter day!
Here’s what’s in store at the Institute:
🕯️ Lantern-Making Workshop: Create your own glowing lantern for the evening’s parade.
🔥 Yule Log Display: Add to our Yule Log display, symbolizing our connection to nature and community during dark times.
☀️ Suncatcher Station: Design a suncatcher to capture the returning rays of the sun.
🌿 Seasonal Spice Blends: Gather aromatic spices to bring warmth to your home.
🐦 Build a Winter Feeder: Help critters survive winter and prepare for spring.
🌸 Paper Wheel Ornaments: Craft ornaments representing the cycle of the seasons.
📖 Solstice Storytime: Settle in to hear Winter Solstice stories.
🎶 Live Music by the Roaring Wastrels: Enjoy medieval carols and wassails performed by costumed musicians.
Here’s what’s in store at the Art Museum:
❄️ Join us in deSalle Auditorium to make your own Winter (Monster) Wonderland puppet show! Create a puppet and take turns presenting your own show on the big screen of the theater.
🎶 In the galleries, enjoy traditional and contemporary Swedish compositions by Swedish Folk (including Julia Kander, CAA MFA Fiber ‘26) for periodic performances throughout the afternoon while you view Haas Brothers: Uncanny Valley. Swedish Folk is a musical ensemble specializing in traditional dance tunes from Sweden and the other Scandinavian countries. Based in the Chicago area, they regularly perform for various events hosted by Scandinavian cultural organizations. Swedish Folk is also the musical accompaniment for the Swedish American Children's Choir and has joined them on multiple tours to the Twin Cities.
💌 In the Art Lab, send good tidings for the season by creating your own Scandinavian inspired greeting card!
😋 At Fika Cafe, you’ll find treats inspired by Scandinavian holiday specialties, gummy candies from Sweden, artisanal flavored hot chocolate, and coffee favorites. A cash bar will be on the lower level featuring beer, wine, and a fragrant spiced Glögg!
🎁 Last minute gifts? In Forum Gallery Cranbrook Academy of Art students will host a special winter sale. At the Cranbrook Art Museum shop, members enjoy a double discount (30%!) on all purchases!
Seasonal snacks and treats will be available for purchase at the Reflections Café.
Tickets are $15 for Members (CIS or CAM) and $20 for non-members. Pre-registration is encouraged and closes Friday, December 19 at 3:00pm.
