In this workshop you will learn how to weave a garden obelisk from willow. Use this beautiful natural structure in your garden as a trellis for plants that love to climb. You can also repurpose it as part of your holiday decorating by adding a set of fairy lights, bows and greenery to dress it up with a festive flair. This is a beginner friendly course, no prior weaving experience is required. The finished obelisk will measure approximately 14" diameter by 54" tall ( be sure you have room in your vehicle to transport it home!)
Please note: weaving willow requires a fair amount of hand strength to control the twisting and shaping of the material. If you experience joint pain or weakness in your hands this workshop may not be suitable for you.
Agnes Niewiadomski will be your instructor. Agnes is a visual artist (OCAD Sculpture/Installation graduate), small business owner and camp director of Mindful Makers. She offers hands-on arts programming to kids and adults in and around the Waterloo Region through day camps, workshops, festival events, and craft kits.
In the fall of 2021, Agnes took her first basketry course and got bit by the basket bug. She is now growing her own willow at a local heritage farm and teaching nature weaving courses regularly. Her love of stick work has led her back into the world of public art making where she collaborates with community groups to create woven sculptural installations. She is excited to continue down this path and to see where her basket journey will take her next.
