William Elliott Whitmore’s gravel-deep voice first turned heads far beyond the Americana underground when his haunting version of "Bury Me Not On The Lone Prairie," appeared in Red Dead Redemption. With the fire of a 1920s gospel preacher and a fascination with sin, death, and redemption, Whitmore conjures a raw blend of country blues, field hollers, and punk spirit. His music feels unearthed rather than written—timeless, weathered, and fiercely alive.Raised on a small farm in Lee County, Iowa, Whitmore grew up working the land and absorbing the music of his family—banjo, accordion, guitar and all. After early days in the hardcore punk scene, he carved out a singular voice with his 2003 debut Hymns for the Hopeless, later signing to punk-rooted label ANTI- and releasing a string of acclaimed albums. His most recent, Silently, The Mind Breaks, returns to stark, powerful storytelling—proving once again that his songs aren’t just performed, they’re lived.
